Lot 647: Collection of Original 1920s Autographs and Photos with Babe Ruth 3 x 5, Lefty Grove, etc. (29)
Unbelievable set of vintage baseball autographs and photographs. There are fifteen (15) black and white images from 1929 with identifications written in black pen and pencil on the back of the photos. There are eight (8) measuring 2 3/4” wide x 5 ½” high: Bob Shawkey, Yankees; Hienie Meunsh, Giants; Mark Koenig, Yankees, Ben Paschal, Yankees; Chick Thompson, Nationals; Eddie Collins, A’s, Cy Perkins, A’s, Joe Judge, Senators; Muddy Ruel, Senators; Earl Combs, Yankees; and Otto Miller, Dodgers. Four (4) of the images measure 3” wide x 5” high: Lefty Faulkner, Giants/Robins; Jim Welsch, Giants/Braves; Andy Reese, Giants; and Carl Mays, Giants. All of the photos are somewhat faded and yellowed but overall grade GD. Many have small creases on the edges, have slightly cracked surfaces, and several have indentations on the image from the pencil notations on the back. The Welch photo has a torn upper right corner, the Faulkner image is torn on the upper left corner, and the Mays image is torn on the upper right corner, middle top edge and lower left corner. There are twelve (12) individual autographs each on its own 3” x 5” index card, and one index card with two (2) signatures on it. The signatures are done in black or blue pen averaging a grade of 8/10, with pencil notations on team and years also on the cards. The card with two autographs is signed by Luke Sewell and Joe Sewell of the Cleveland Indians. The other signatures are: Babe Ruth, Lefty Grove, Goose Goslin, Dazzy Vance, Jess Petty, Babe Herman, Pete Scott, Overton Tremper, Lloyd Waner, Arnold Statz, Otto Miller, and Al Lopez. The cards are yellowed and faded but this are otherwise in GD condition. Also included in this lot is a color postcard of Frank Frisch’s Baseball Hall of Fame Plaque, autographed on the back in blue pen by Frisch. The 3 ½” x 5 ½” card is EX with the signature grading 9/10. All of the items in this lot have excellent provenance.
