Lot 1582: Black Kids Boxers 1905 Print
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Color illustration of two little black boys boxing in a makeshift ring with a championship banner in one corner and a rooster running in front of them. "Foul!" is written in the foreground. The print is dated 1905 and the artist appears to be "de Yongh." Aside from whether these odd images may have been intended as a racial put-down or an innocent rendering, the print is a particularly good example of the era's sports art with its crisp, precise detailing and evocative facial expressions. The work has been exhibited through the years, at one time encased in a massive wood frame with raised carved boxing gloves and a raised carved pennant reading "Champion". Here, the 10 x 11" print is under glass in a 12 x 14" antique wood frame with gold inlays and a bead design. Condition of the print itself is VG-EX with soiling visible only on the white borders.
