Lot 1829: Collection of Signed First Day Covers and Letters
Auction Date:6/26/2005 9:00 PM EST
This is one of the greatest collections of football signatures you could get outside of waiting at the Pro Football Hall of Fame for alumni to pass through. And even then you wouldn't succeed because some listed below are dead. Bound vinyl green scrapbook (EX) with plastic protective sheets is packed with the names that made the game, mostly autographed on "Official First Day Cover" envelopes commemorating the first football game ever, between Rutgers and Princeton in 1869. EX signatures include Mike Michalske, Ernie Nevers, Link Lyman, Red Grange, Ernie Stautner, Clarke Hinkle, Bonko Nagurski, Greasy Neale, Crazylegs Hirsch, Paul Brown, Otto Graham, Mel Hein, Emlen Tunnell, Sid Luckman, John Blood McNally, Alex Wojciechowicz, Jack Christiansen, George Halas, Cal Hubbard, Hugh McElhenny, Don Hutson and Frank "Bruiser" Kinard. Also included are Pete Rozelle, Tom Dempsey and Steve Van Buren. There are 74 signatures in all -- decades worth of greatness for you to admire.
