Lot 23: Stuart Sutcliffe Works of Art (2)
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Two extraordinarily rare works of art by the ill-fated Stuart Sutcliffe, whose brief stint with the then-obscure Beatles has become a romanticized part of the band's legacy. He toured with the group in Hamburg, and quit in 1961 to study art at the Hamburg State Art College. A year later, he died from a brain hemorrhage.
The two pieces are influenced by Dali, although radically different from each other. One is a watercolor marina scape, while the other a disturbing pastel and pen & ink rendering of two women, with an eerie Grim Reaper-like figure in the background. Both pieces are 8x10” and have a serrated edge, where they were torn from a pad. The watercolor has no damage. The second piece, has a tear 2” tear near the serrated edge, and corner creasing.
