Lot 524: Alphonse Mucha Posters (2)
Austrian-born lithographer and master colorist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) created about 100 posters and decorative panels and has remained one of the few artists whose body of work still excites collectors the world over. Everything that is best about the style -- elaborate ornamentation with themes from nature, fine draftsmanship, the idealized feminine subjects, use of symbolism and allegory -- flourished in him to a high degree of stunning mastery. Among his ethereal masterpieces are these two prints of his 1899 works "Eclat du Jour" and "Reverie du Soir", the dainty images of which are typically awash in light pastels and bordered by intricate gold geometric patterns. Mounted on sturdy canvas, they each measure 16 3/8 x 43 1/2". "Eclat du Jour" is in NRMT condition, "Reverie du Soir" slightly less so, with some darkening of the overall image and very minor soiling of the lower left corner and across the top border.
