To the best of our knowledge, an award from this Grand Slam event has never hit the auction block, and certainly this one has never fallen into collectors' hands. It was acquired directly from the ex-wife of Roscoe Tanner, the man who defeated Guillermo Vilas in straight sets (6-3, 6-3, 6-3) in the Finals played in January of 1977. The unassuming winner's cup weights in at just over eight pounds, but the importance and desirability of the piece is incalculable. Crafted in exquisite bronze, the piece measures only 8.25" from the bottom of the base to the lip of the cup, which in engraved, "The Lawn Tennis Association of Australia, Anthony Wilding Memorial Trophy, Australian Singles Championship, 1977." The cup has remained in the possession of either Tanner himself, or of his wife, since it was awarded half a world away and a quarter of a century ago. Letter of authenticity is from the ex-Mrs. Tanner.
