This letter is in reference to the Gibson SG Model with serial number 969850. I was gifted this guitar by Pete Townshend during the 1970’s. He gave it to me after a WHO concert in Cleveland. This was a stage used guitar. I know Pete through my association as a disc jockey and in later years the personal manager of Joe Walsh. A dear friend of Pete’s. Respectfully yours, David Spero April 20, 2013
This is one of the survivors. British singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Peter Townshend made his name as the lead guitarist and composer for the group The Who, frequently smashing his guitars on stage. From the band's prime touring years of the 1970s, this Gibson was used by Pete on stage during at least one Who concert in Cleveland. It shows actually much more careful concert use. Peter gifted it to Cleveland disc jockey David Spero, who was later the personal manager of fellow musician and Townshend buddy Joe Walsh. The guitar comes in its original case and It comes with an LOA from Spero, explaining how he came into his possession. Townshend has been active for over half a century since his beginnings as a member of the band the Detours in his native England. Nearly 30 years after first setting on stage, Townshend was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Who in 1990. Over his career, he has used a large variety of guitars, mostly various Fender and Gibson models such as this. He has also used Guild, Takamine and Gibson J-200 acoustic models. Serial number 969850.
