Aside from being the president of the Second Continental Congress, noted Declaration of Independence signer John Hancock was also the first and third governor of the State of Massachusetts. This letter was signed during his first term in 1984, upon promotion of an officer to 2nd Lieutenant status. It is dated September 6th, and the document was either misprinted or previously printed, as it originally read "in the fifth year of the Independence of the United States of America," however "fifth" has been crossed out and "seventh" written next to it, while the printed year of 1782 appears to have the last digit changed to a "4" by hand as well. The document has some minor folds and tears but Hancock's familiar signature is very vivid and is 7.5/10.
