Lot 660: The Symbolic Golden Shoe Pendant Presented to Team Members
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||||
This gold shoe with enamel "P" was presented to living members of the NFL's Maroons... a team that existed for just four seasons (1925-28) but had its 1925 NFL championship vacated in a controversial decision by the commissioner at the time. The Maroons' official sporting goods outfitter Joseph Zacko waged a lifetime battle to have that title restored to the town of Pottsville, refusing to donate kicker Charlie Berry's bronzed shoe that kicked the winning field goal against Notre Dame to the Hall of Fame until the title was in fact restored. The shoe has become a symbol of tenacity and resiliency to the town's citizens.
