Lot 385: 1998 New York Yankees World Championship Ring
Joe Torre's 1998 Yankees were a juggernaut that breezed through the regular season with 114 wins and cruised through the postseason, culminating in a four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres to repeat as World Champions. This spectacular ring from that special season is in NRMT condition and belonged to an employee named Ferrar and features real diamonds on top comprising the NY logo on the blue stone background. The wording encircling the face reads: WORLD CHAMPIONS with 1998 split on the left and right sides. The left shank boasts the recipient's name and the word TRADITION with the championship trophy superimposed against Yankee Stadium in between. On the right shank is the team's record of 125-50 (counting an 11-2 postseason) and the words: BEST EVER surrounding the team logo. "Balfour 10K" is stamped inside, and it the ring is housed in the original Balfour box. What made the 1998 Yankees' gaudy record especially impressive was the fact that not one player hit 30 home runs (first baseman Tino Martinez led the club with 28 dingers and 123 RBI) and only one pitcher - David Cone - won as many as 20 games (he was 20-7). This is a shimmering tribute to a remarkable club that was a testament to perfect chemistry. Size 10.
