Lot 630: Sandy Koufax Rookie Paperwork

At the tender age of three, Sanford Braun's mother divorced his father. Six years later she would remarry and her son would take the surname of his stepfather, Irving Koufax. It was Irving Koufax, a New York attorney, who negotiated Sandy's first contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers and owner Al Campanis. This lot includes a cover letter sent from Irving Koufax to Campanis, along with a copy of the typewritten, unsigned proposal on Sandy's behalf. The letter is dated October 26, 1954 and the contract includes a salary of $6,000 a year for two years, with a $14,000 signing bonus (the terms eventually agreed to by the respective parties.
