Lot 771: Complete Set of All Five 1967 Monterey Pop Festival Tickets
Number Of Bids:
Auction Date:6/15/2012 9:00 PM EST
The Monterey International Pop Music Festival was a three-day concert event held June 16 to June 18, 1967 at the County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California. Held two years before the Woodstock Festival, it was the first widely promoted and heavily attended rock festival, attracting an estimated 200,000 total attendees with up to 90,000 people present at the event's peak. The festival is remembered for the first major American appearances by Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Ravi Shankar, the first large scale public performance of Janis Joplin, and the introduction to a large, predominantly white audience of Otis Redding. This lot contains a complete set of all five tickets for the festival, and is only one of two such sets known to exist. Enclosed in a plastic case, there is one ticket for each of the five sessions, and most appear (#1,2,4,5 ) to be in NM+ condition and the Saturday night (#3) in VG to EX condition. Also included is an unfolded business card, with one side having the event's logo and name, and the other containing the address of its executive offices on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. While history recalls Woodstock as one of the seminal moments of the 1960s, it was the Monterey Festival that served as the template and launching pad for many events and careers to follow.
