John Arthur ("Jack") Johnson - nicknamed the “Galveston Giant” - was an American boxer who, at the height of the Jim Crow era, became the first African-American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908–1915). In his stellar career, Johnson fought and defeated Sam Langford, Stanley Ketchel, Tommy Burns and James Jeffries among others. Offered here is a very rare illustrated, vintage china plate commemorating the fighter. The plate, 8.25" in diameter, pictures Johnson at center and has printed, "Jack Johnson Champion Fighter Of The World." In fine condition with floral bouquets on the perimeter and gold leaf on the border. Clean with no chips or cracks. Wonderful early 20th century souvenir of this great champion.
