This exceptional oil on canvas comes from an important New York art collection. It once belonged to Eliza Parkinson Cobb, who is noted for helping shape today's modern museum at the Museum of Modern Art. Her family were among the museum's founders and she served many functions within the organization, including president and trustee. This painting is a great image of William "Boss" Tweed, the New York Political Boss, with engulfing American Flag behind. The artist is unknown, with the work signed signed H.K., but was part of Cobb's commitment to art in conjunction with the Works Progress Administration. The WPA was a New Deal plan implemented in the early 1930s to help people find employment in the arts, among other endeavors. Measures 17.5 x 21.5
