This is an original Silver Helmet Award, a prestigious honor given out by AMVETS to U.S. veterans who have shown "excellence and outstanding accomplishment in the fields of Americanism, defense, rehabilitation, congressional and civil service" (amvets.org). The winner of this award was Irving M. Levine, a World War II veteran and prominent neurologist who was chief of neurological research at the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Boston for nearly 30 years. The 12.5" award is inscribed with the following: "Silver Helmet Rehabilitation Award / Presented to Irving M. Levine, M.D. / Giver of Hope - Humanitarian / Physician Extraordinarius." The award is missing a textile-based chinstrap, but is otherwise in EX condition.
