Description
The precursor to the political campaign pin adorning the lapels of today's candidates and their supporters, valuable items such as these were worn as clothing buttons. This is the "Link States" type and all 13 original colonies are represented in ovals around the outer edge and the words: "LONG LIVE THE PRESIDENT" circling the middle. The brass is oxidized but can be cleaned. The nation's first president was inaugurated in both 1789 and 1793 after having led the American victory over Britain in the American Revolutionary War as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Washington also presided over the writing of the Constitution. This button comes from the esteemed J. Harold Cobb Collection.
