Lot 793: 1922 Harry Greb Fight Worn Gloves From The Ring Magazine Collection

Historically important pair of glove were worn by Harry Greb to defeat Gene Tunney the first time that the two met. Greb won the battle of 15 rounds and handed Tunney his first and only professional defeat. By beating Tunney, Greb was also awarded the title of American Light Heavyweight Champion. Maroon colored gloves have worn labels on each wrist. Each glove has white paint identifying the fight in which they were worn. This paint was applied by a staff member of The Ring and reads "Harry Greb Won 15 Rounds Gene Tunney May 23, 1922 New York City". Leather of both gloves is cracking and horse hair stuffing is exposed at the wrist cuffs and other areas. A very early and important pair of fight worn gloves from a rock solid source. These were once on display at The Ring Magazine offices in New York City. LOA.
