Lot 1231: Circa 1878 Seamstress or Cook Occupational Daguerreotype

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $100.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:7/9/2010 9:00 PM EST

Rare sixth plate daguerreotype measures roughly 2 3/4 x 3" and shows a woman of the period holding some kind of tool in her hand that appears to be either for cooking or sewing. On the internet listing for this lot we will show a close-up and allow you to make your own judgment. Her dress is quite fancy leading us to believe this was a formal occupation rather than a home craft. Dag is clear as a bell and recently came fresh from an estate in Maine. The original case has been replaced with a beautiful gutta percha Union case. The original case (a gutta frame which is included) has been damaged but shows the identity of the woman scratched into the verso. It reads what appears to be "Bertha Barron Lowell 1878." EX+.
