Large collection of 24 Rittgers sports figurines in many comical positions with cartoon-like expressions by famed artist Lafayette "Steve" Rittgers. These are tough to find for sale individually, and are not available elsewhere as a whole set. The figurines at auction here are described as follows: a three-piece baseball set from 1939 featuring two ballplayers and an umpire; a three-piece wrestling set from 1941 that includes two wrestlers and a referee; a two-piece football set containing two football players that dates from 1941; a two-piece bowling-themed set, also from 1941, with a male bowler and a female bowler (the woman's left leg is cracked and there is a 3/4" chip just above her left shoe); a three-piece boxing set from 1942 featuring two boxers and a referee who has just taken a punch from one of them; a 1946 baseball set with two pieces - a batter and an umpire who has just been clocked by the bat; a 1947 baseball-themed wall plaque with three players and an umpire; a two-piece golf-themed set featuring a golfer and his caddie from 1948; a three-piece basketball set with two players and a hoop dating from 1949 (the head of one player is intentionally knocked off); and a three-piece wrestling set from 1952 including two wrestlers (Gorgeous George and Gorilla George) and an apoplectic referee. Also included is a 15" square boxing ring on a base (not a Rittgers piece) measuring 20 x 20" that was professionally made for our consignor, and a 29-page illustrated book entitled "Collecting Rittgers" by Charlie Bulko. The sports figurines range in height from 2 1/2" to roughly 9"; the average height is about 6". They are in overall NM condition and almost impossible to find in this quantity. If you collect sports figurines, you may have just hit the jackpot!
