The great John L. Sullivan could probably be considered America’s first sports superstar. He was certainly the most iconic and popular sports figure in the last two decades of the 19th century, and was a pivotal figure in the fight game. He started boxing when it was illegal, but through his exploits and the force of his personality he pushed it towards legitimacy. He was the last bare-knuckle heavyweight champion and the first gloved heavyweight champion. His championship reign lasted from 1882-1892. But, for many years later his larger-than-life persona became a touchstone embodying excellence for a nation that was just beginning to manifest its destiny. The magnificent photograph of the young '"John L" in his prime captures his supreme self confidence, and the sheer size of the image is a fitting tribute to the way he lived life. The photograph (circa 1884/5) is an albumen, mammoth plate print that measures 27 1/2 x 31" framed. It bears the studio stamp of a famed New York City photographer John L.. Sullivan’s signature is inscribed on the mount which enhances its aesthetic appeal. There is some damage to the mount, but the albumen image itself is in EX-MT condition and displays beautifully. Nineteenth century photography of this size and quality and of such a legendary figure as the great “John L” is exceedingly rare. It is no wonder that it was originally part of the famed Duke Hott Boxing Collection.
