Douglas Fairbanks was Hollywood’s brightest star and his wife Mary Pickford was “America’s Sweetheart”. They were the original Hollywood power couple, before Gable & Lombard, Tracy & Hepburn, and yes, Brangelina. Pickford’s “sweetheart” image belied her enormous role in shaping today’s movie industry. Originally signed by D. W. Griffith in 1909, Pickford at the tender age of 26 wielded her box office clout and formed, with Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin, the first independent film company, United Artists. Their home, Pickfair, was the social center for Hollywood during the "Roaring 20’s”. This gorgeous silver gelatin print of the star couple was taken circa 1926, in a Paris garden, and bears an Abbe Studios stamp on the reverse. It measures 11 x 14" and is in Mint condition. It hung at Pickfair and bore witness to Hollywood history during its infancy. It was purchased in a Hollywood auction over 25 years ago and comes with a letter of provenance from the original buyer.
