Lot 881: Knute Rockne Humidor
Number Of Bids:
Auction Date:7/9/2010 9:00 PM EST
This unusual piece is a football-shaped humidor on a dark wood base. The humidor is made from an actual football with the Spalding logo stamped into the leather and the stitching still at the top of the ball, which has been cut in half laterally and opens on a hinge. Inside is a tag that reads "Hugh Fullerton's Souvenir All American Football Dinner ... in honor of Knute Rockne, Ted Jones, Glenn Warner, Fielding Yost ... Hotel Commodore New York Nov. 30 1925." The humidor measures 10 1/2 x 7"; the wooden base measures 8 x 6" and sports a plaque reading "Hugh Fullerton Compliments of Christy Walsh." It has been determined that the humidor contains the signatures of Rockne, Jones, Warner and Yost, but only the Yost signature is legible as the others are very faded. Entire humidor is enclosed in a display case with a plaque at the top stating "Knute Rockne - Notre Dame March 4, 1888 - March 31, 1931." Comes with JSA LOA.
