Lot 526: 1952 Ernest Hemingway Old Man and the Sea Signed 1st Edition
This is a signed first edition of perhaps his most famous work of. The NRMT black ink inscription on the front right endpa-per reads, "For Jack French wishing him all good things always Ernest Hemingway La Habana 17 Deciembre 1952." Interestingly, Hemingway used this same page to lean on and above the inscription there is other writing (dated 1952). Signed in Havana, Cuba where he fittingly wrote the book and where he lived when it was published, this specimen ended up in the "Bohemia Bookstore & Lending Library" in Havana and has the original label. Adding to its charm, character and provenance the edition contains other intriguing markings. This monumental work takes you to a different time and place. The Hemingway cover blindstamp on the blue cloth boards, the Scribner's seal and no "A" on the copyright page assure this is a first edition. The book is in overall VG-Fine condition and comes with a fine condition dust wrapper. This is an early printing of the first edition and was likely given to a friend by Hemingway as a personal gift. I would like to take the great DiMaggio fishing," the old man said. "They say his father was a fisherman."
