In 1962, Willard Mullin created the New York Mets Baby which became the team's mascot during its fledgling years. The Baby was brash and cocky, as would befit youth, but He had a lot to learn and His team suffered many mis-takes of youth. In the offered piece, the upstart Baby is shown squirting the World Champion Yankees in the eye as the Mets defeat them in Grapefruit League action. This cartoon originally hung in Mullin's study and was acquired from his daughter. In the left-hand corner of the matte, there is a hand-written card, in Mullin's hand, that reads, "On loan from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rhodes. The first model for the "Amazin' Mets" was Ted Rhodes, the grandson of Willard Mullin." The cartoon comes with an original photo of Mullin sketching his grand-son. Fabulous! 17"x 21" framed.
