Lot 1045: 1885 Official National League Baseball Box
ITEM DESCRIPTION

It doesn't get much more rare than this, or much more impressive for collectors of vintage baseball equipment. Thrillingly preserved box is among the very first to roll of the production line after Spalding was named the official supplier of baseballs to the National League. An extract from the minutes of the League meeting in November of 1884 is printed on the paper band that once formed the seal of the box stating this. On an adjacent side is written on this same band, in vintage ink, "Yale Business College vs. Orange, May 30th, 1885, 26 to 14." Obviously the ball that was once housed in this box was used in the game, less than six months into Spalding's reign as ONL baseball. Condition is EX-MT, and we challenge anyone, anywhere to find one better.
