Lot 1150: 1915 Jack Johnson vs. Jess Willard Rare Cuban Postcard

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $300.00
Winning Bid: $349.33
Price Realized: $417.45
Auction Date:8/31/2001 9:00 PM EST

Incredible piece is filled with history. Shows famed image of the count of Johnson down with his gloves shielding his eyes from the blaring sun. The fact that he was aware enough to do this was supposed proof that Johnson threw the fight (to stay out of prison). The postcard specifically relates to this issue. Entitled, "The Truth" (translated), it asks you to send this postcard in to vote on your opinion of whether Johnson threw the fight or not. On verso is the address to send this to and a handwritten note by the owner of the big "prize fight" at "Oriental Park" in Mariano on April 5, 1915. The first Cuban Johnson-Willard piece we have seen.
