Lot 450: 1930's Babe Ruth Old Gold Trifold Cardboard Advertising Display
ITEM DESCRIPTION
This is easily one of the best 20th century baseball advertising diplays to ever pass through our doors. This tri-fold cardboard ad for Old Gold Cigarettes measures 38 x 52" when properly assembled, and features all-time baseball legend Babe Ruth in "The Blindfold Cigarette Test." According to the ad, Babe said of the brand: "Old Gold's mildness and smoothness marked it 'right off the bat' as the best." Only a handful of these ads are known to remain in existence. This one is medium grade, showing some definite wear and aging, but still manages to maintain a fabulous aesthetic appeal. It dates back to the early 1930's, when The Babe was still slugging homers for the New York Yankees. Both side panels are detached, but the full ad is included and could be easily repaired. There are some surface abrasions and stains, as well as evidence of having been cleaned with water, but otherwise, this piece has not been altered from its original state. No professional restoration of any kind has been attempted. Side panels contain the copy, "Smoother and Better" and "Not a cough in a carload."
