Lot 1077: 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics Torch

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,500.00
Winning Bid: $2,557.28
Price Realized: $3,055.95

The first torch of the modern era, this one carried the flame from Mt. Olympus in Greece to Berlin, Germany, where Jesse Owens challenged Hitler's white supremacist ideals with a commanding performance in track and field. Engraved with eagle gripping Olympic rings above the words, "Fackel-Staffel-Lauf...Olympia-Berlin...1936." Path of the flame's journey through Eastern Europe is diagrammed along the barrel. A remarkable piece from the most significant Olympic Games of the century. The best condition specimen we have seen. NRMT.
