Lot 36: Babe Bows Out by Nat Fein
ITEM DESCRIPTION

Nat Fein’s “The Babe Bows Out” is one of baseball’s, and sport’s for that matter, most iconic images, and offers a view with two unique perspectives, that of the Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, and that of Babe Ruth himself -- Yankee Stadium, with its empty field, cherished memories, adulatory fans, and baseline of teammates. Fein positioned himself behind the venerable slugger, not only to capture Ruth’s #3, as it was the retirement of that number that brought this audience together, but also to avoid Ruth’s sick and broken façade. Ruth would die two months later. This glorious photograph, like the legend, lives on, and is both a true treasure and proper remembrance. It is a first generation print from the original negative, measuring 20x16”, and developed within a decade of its shuttering upon that emotional day of June 13, 1948. Measures 32 ¾ x 29 ½” inside a beautiful three-tiered, grooved frame, is matted, and is vintage-mounted on mat board. Clarity and contrast are perfect. Fein’s blue-inked signature rates an 8-9/10.
