Lot 1235: 1981 Prototype Wayne Gretzky Finn-Am Game Stick

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $400.00
Winning Bid: $563.59
Price Realized: $673.49
Auction Date:8/31/2001 9:00 PM EST

The story, according to the ex-Oilers employee who owned the stick, was that during the 1981-82, Oiler Matti Hagman had some financial interest in an upstart stick company called Finn-Am. He used this model and persuaded Wayne to give it a try. A half-dozen prototypes were manufactured in Wayne's pattern and stamped "Gretzky". Although Wayne tested the sticks in practice, they never saw action in a game. This example, the first to be offered in the market, is taped in the distinctive Gretzky style with bulldog tape on the blade. It is marked with "99" in blue at the knob and again lower on the shaft, in the same manner of his Titan sticks from the same period. The heel shows a slight crack, no doubt the reason Wayne stuck with his indestructible Titan TPM2020 gamers. Included in the lot is a matching Matti Hagman Finn-Am game used stick.
