Lot 342: Alan Freed's Golden Mike Award

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $500.00
Winning Bid: $852.43
Price Realized: $1,018.65
Auction Date:8/31/2001 9:00 PM EST

1959 (6x12x22") Here's one of the few personal items ever to find its way into the marketplace from the legendary disc jockey credited with coining the phrase, "Rock N Roll." A marble base with an engraved metal plaque reads: "Golden Mike Award…WINS Radio….Alan Freed." WINS, of course, was the New York City station that hired Freed after he left his "Moondog's Rock 'n Roll Party" radio show in Cleveland. From his first Moondog Coronation Ball in 1952, through his series of Hollywood teenage rock movies, to his renowned concert promotions, and ultimately to his downfall as a scapegoat of the late 50's payola scandal, his tumultuous career was well documented. Freed's undeniable love for the music, its creators, performers, and listeners, can nly be fully appreciated by hearing the enthusiasm his voice exudes in his natural element -- that being, the radio. "Freed estate" is hand written on bottom. LOA states that the trophy had been in the possession of a now-deceased WINS engineer.
