Lot 563: 1978 New York Yankees World Championship Ring
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Until the beginning of the new dynasty in 1996, this was the last World Championship ring any Yankee could boast. This one was awarded to a front office worker, but other than the engraved name, it differs in no way from those awarded to Reggie, Thurman and Catfish. Large, real diamond at center of a blue stone on face is surrounded by the text, "World Champions." Left shank has "Yankees" scripted over a miniature World Series trophy; right shank has former owner's name (Gil) engraved over the Yankee logo with year "1978" and the words "Pride" and "Tradition." Engraved inside the ring are the words, "Greatest Comeback in History," a reminder of the loss of the first two games that preceded four straight October wins. Fourteen-karat gold by Balfour. Size 9.5.
