Lot 69: 1899 Police Gazette Sporting Annual Boxing Yearbook
Rare 150+ page pocket sized booklet issued by Richard K Fox of the Police Gazette in 1899. Loaded with boxing information, there are several full page plates of the popular fighters of the day including Tom Sharkey, Bob Fitzsimmons, George Dixon and more. The guide is taped to a piece of heavy paper (typical of Gelman) but has the original covers attached. Woody Gelman is one of the true father's of vintage card collecting. As the publisher of The Card Collectors Catalogue he brought the "hobby" into modern times. As the creative guru behind Topps from the very beginning he defined the modern baseball card with his birth of the 1952 Topps Baseball Card set. He set the standard in non sports with his work on Mars Attacks! He did it all. Woody passed on in 1978 and things have never been quite the same. All of the material in this section are from the Woody Gelman Collection and will come with a Lelands.com LOA stating such. Most of the pieces are mounted on his original black paper "pages" with his very own handwriting in chalk. They are part of the "big picture" cataloguing of his collection as an American history in graphic design and paper.
