Admiral William D. Leahy was the first U.S. military officer ever to hold a five-star rank. This is a letter he wrote to his childhood friend actor Charles Winninger in August, 1946, while he was traveling with President Truman serving as Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy. Leahy was known as being critical of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Shortly after he wrote this letter Leahy resigned, in March, 1949, and the following year published his war memoirs, “I Was There.” Included with this letter are two small photos, one of Winninger, the other of Leahy.
