This is an original 1918 International News Service photo of George Herman Ruth as a Red Sox pitcher warming up at Comiskey Park in preparation to pitch game one of the 1918 World Series versus the Chicago Cubs. Most likely shot by Paul Thompson. The Cubs played their 1918 WS home games at Comiskey which had a greater seating capacity than Weeghman Park. The photo measures 6 1/2 x 8 1/2" and has been professionally restored on the verso where the remnants of a large crease are evident. There are also several creases evident on the front side which do not detract from the overall fine image of Ruth. Also visible in the photo is the Comiskey scoreboard with "The Chicago Tribune" banner visible on top as well as "Buy War Bonds" on the outfield fence. These clues as well as a blank scoreboard indicating this was the only contest of the day point to this certainly being game 1, pitched and won by Ruth 1-0, which took place on September 5, earlier than normal due to WWI.
