Lot 840: Opening Pitchers for the 1919 World Series

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $100.00
Winning Bid: $7,025.63

One of the most interesting and unusual baseball photographs we have offered. This photo was taken just before the start of Game 1 of the 1919 World Series. It captures starting pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Dutch Reuther shaking hands. The side story is much more interesting. The first pitch thrown by Cicotte would decide the fate of the 1919 World Series (if he hit the first batter Morris Rath, the fix was on). What must have been going on in the head of ace Eddie Cicotte at that very moment? About 7.5x10''. Strong VG-EX, most would say EX. International Film Service wire photograph.
