Lot 315: 1957 Willie Mays' First Gold Glove Award
ITEM DESCRIPTION

UPDATE: The removable glove on the base of the award is from a later year that Mays won the award. It is indeed a glove that came with one of Willie Mays' Gold Glove awards but not the 1957 that is offered here. We assume that since the glove is removable, it got mixed up with another Gold Glove Award that Mays had at the time that he gifted this to Mudcat Grant
Willie Mays earned his first Gold Glove in 1957, the first year they were awarded. This particular award is notable in that it was the only Gold Glove Willie Mays won wearing a NY Giants uniform and one of only two Willie Mays Gold Glove awards currently in private hands. Given by Mays to his Major League buddy, Mud Cat Grant, the award is a gold colored, Rawlings Trapeze model glove, branded in the pocket with "National League All Star Fielding Team." It sits atop a wood base that has the words, "Advertisers Display & Exhibits, Inc. St Louis, Mo." on the bottom. The gold plaque in front of the glove has the wording, "1957 Rawlings Gold Glove Award CF Willie Mays The Sporting News All Star Fielding Team." To the right of the glove is a small, metal, figural baseball player attached to the wood base. It is the only replacement component on a piece that is otherwise 100% original and in EX condition. Amazing!
