Two of the finest and perhaps the only surviving complete examples from 1983 on the planet. These were designed and fabricated by Mike Melton at the US Cycling Team Technical Development division in Dayton, Ohio. Ten of these team pursuit bikes were made by Raleigh and specifically issued to each of the track pursuit riders in Caracas, Venezuela were they were ridden to a Gold medal finish by the US Team Pursuit Squad. The larger of the two frames is completely original and un-restored while the smaller one has been slightly refurbished. When these were un-crated in Caracas, the Russian coaches of the Cuban team nicknamed them "Funny Bicycles," thus the name "Funny Bike" was coined for aerodynamic bicycles. These were the very first aerodynamic bicycles built under the Raleigh name. The custom paint is red, white and blue with stars. These bikes represent a true turning point in the history of American bicycle racing. They dominated the Pan Am Games with a Gold medal finish in every event except one and set the stage for the US Olympic Team's 1984 performance in Los Angeles. A true cost of each bicycle was never confirmed but it has been estimated that they were produced at a cost of around $18,000 each.
