On July 4, 1923, Shelby, Montana set it's hopes of the big time on a
showcase heavyweight title fight between boxing idol Jack Dempsey and
the unknown Tommy Gibbons. It soon became a financial disaster for
the town and known as one of the dullest heavyweight bouts ever. This
neat 6.5 x 9.5 vintage news service photo shows the crowds, plentiful
empty bleachers and the fight all with the hills of Shelby, dotted
with non-paying spectators, in the background. Some ink spots are
visible on the ring, there are some white editing enhancements in the
corners and some minor spotting visible in the horizon. Overall,
though, this is a very nice photo with a fascinating history.
