Lot 471: 1950-60s Wire photos of Cuba (58)
ITEM DESCRIPTION
|
||||||||||||
In the 1960's, Castro's Cuba flaunted their relationship with the
Soviet Union and thrilled in watching the US squirm, especially after
the botched Bay of Pigs invasion. This collection of (58) wire photos
is a great example of the media, and the country's, obsession with
the red menace of the Caribbean. Images include: Various May Day
parades where Castro showed off his Soviet supplied arsenal; Yank
hung in effigy over a Cuban store front; teenage girl guarding a
Havana storefront as part of the militia & publications from
communist countries at a newsstand; tours of downed US planes after
the Bay of Pigs. Most are front captioned wire photos; a few earlier
images have caption sheets on versos. Sized from 6 x 10" to 8 x11",
all are at least VG (mostly due to editing marks) with many NM/MT.
