Lot 513: Incredible Lou Gehrig 1922 Hartford Senators Team Photo
ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
The Iron Horse pictured the year before he would go to the major leagues. In spectacular sepia tone on cardboard stock, this sumptuous image features the entire lineup of Gehrig's 1922 Hartford team in the Eastern League. In blue pen on the front is written "Champions Eastern League 1922" and "Lou Gehrig" with an asterisk (as well as the teammate who this likely originated from). There are two small chips on the upper right-hand and middle right-hand of the photo but otherwise mounted on cardboard and EX-MT with excellent contrast. This is the team that Gehrig was playing for, right after high school, when he was discovered and brought to the Yankees. Only specimen known of this previously unknown image which was discovered in the Hartford area and likely only given to team members. The short stint he played there and the fact that other than the Yankees this was the only professional team he ever played for adds to its importance and rarity. 13x8.5".
