Lot 89: 1960 Olympic Program Signed by Cassius Clay

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $2,000.00
Winning Bid:
Auction Date:5/3/2007 9:00 PM EST

From the 1960 Summer Olympics, held in the Olympiad in Rome, Italy, a sports program signed by three American gold medalists. Orange-colored program with a picture of the Olympiad in the background of the front is signed by discus record-setter Al Oerter, sprinter Wilma Rudolph and young Cassius Clay, who won the Light Heavyweight division at the games. All three signatures are in blue or black pen, Clay reading “From Cassius Clay 19-60”. There is a light crease at the upper right corner of the program but otherwise it is in Near Mint condition. All three signatures were obtained in-person at the games and are rated 9/10. Oerter overcame a case of polio before the three-medal win and many say that Clay’s triumph at the games would be the spark that lit his amazing professional career. Both Oerter and Clay live on but Rudolph succumbed to brain cancer in 1994, a decade before she would be immortalized on a 23-cent postage stamp. A vintage piece of Olympics glory and each athlete’s personal triumph.
