Lot 289: Massive Baseball Photograph Collection (5,000 + pieces)
One of the most massive and comprehensive baseball photo collections we have encountered. About 80% of the collection is of the 8x10" variety, with the remainder being 5" x 7". Mostly black and white with a few color. The first part of the collection consists of over 300 original wire photos dating from the 1920s to the 1970s, collected by Jim Rowe over a 40-year span; he kept them for his personal collection and also to make copies for sale. Great names with the likes of Ruth, Gehrig, Jackie Robinson (some with the the Montreal Royals and others with the Dodgers), Bucky Harris, Wynn, Kluszewski, Stengel, 1939 photo of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Cubs team photos including 1929, Moe Berg, Maris, Bing Crosby with the Pirates, Al Simmons, Honus Wagner (later in life), Grove and so forth. The second part of the collection consists of team-issued photos, photos that Jim made from original negatives (many shot by George Burke) and photos that Jim made from copy negatives. These prints that Jim made were mostly done in the 1960's and 70's. This is a comprehensive collection of 20th century baseball and the players. Includes many team photos, important events, stadiums and the like. The players are almost entirely Major Leaguers with very little material from the minors. Unlimited potential with incredible break-up value! Many photos are still in their 1970s-1980's plastic pages. Overall condition is EX or better. From Chance to Ruth to Mantle, they are all here. Incredible collection that took over 5 decades to assemble.
