Lot 1560: 1940 J. Edgar Hoover File with TLS (7)

Typed letter dated 3/13/1940 on Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) letterhead, signed in black fountain pen by Director J. Edgar Hoover. Letter is to editor William C. Wren of the San Francisco Examiner, content regards period criticism of the FBI and Hoover's administration thereof. Letter reads in part, "recent criticisms...have been directed at my administration...I thought you might be interested in the enclosed items. The clippings from the Communistic papers...have emanated from three principal sources: first, from the Communist Party of America...with respect to subversive and illegal activities..." Included are photos of the clippings referenced (3), a Department of Justice press release dated 3/1/1940 regarding correspondence along the lines mentioned above, between Senator George W. Norris and Attorney General Robert H. Jackson, a period photo of a 1950 telegram from Hoover to the International News Service (stamps on back) and a 1953 wire photo of Hoover with James Lee of the International News Service, whose spotlight on the "nation's Ten Most Wanted fugitive criminals has proved a most effective weapon in the fight against crime" (stamps and caption on back). Items are EX-EXMT overall, Hoover's signature grades a perfect 10.

This is one largest collections ever of historic vintage photos spanning the entire 20th century. The San Francisco Examiner was the first paper acquired by William Randolph Hearst and itself was the subject of the film classic Citizen Kane. The majority of the photographs are fully identified, and back-stamped with dates. Included throughout this auction is a diverse mix of subjects including sports, historical, political, transportation, Hollywood, and all facets of entertainment.
