Lot 736: 1979 Thurman Munson All Star Bat
ITEM DESCRIPTION
Treasured New York Yankee catcher Thurman Munson had been an All-Star from 1973 on, and so this unused Adirondack (model 369A) bat had been already made (a common practice) for Munson’s anticipated participation in 1979’s game, as is branded in its barrel, “Thurman Munson All Star 79.” His untimely and tragic death in a plane crash that same year left the baseball world stunned, as his influence on that decade of the 1970’s, with his Rookie of the Year, Gold Gloves, ’76 MVP, and World Series wins with the New York Yankees, was nothing less than essential and definitive. This celebrated bat is 35 inches and weighs 31 ounces, and has “369A TM” stamped in its knob. The only one we wll probably ever see.
