Lot 1483: Al Capone & Jack Sharkey (1929)

The Hall of Fame boxer and legendary gangster pose for this photo taken two years after Capone was accused of attempting to fix the Tunney-Dempsey rematch. Had Sharkey have beaten Dempsey on July 21, 1927, it would have been him fighting for the belt that evening. Press stamp. NRMT. 4.5x5.5”.

This is one largest collections ever of historic vintage photos spanning the entire 20th century. The San Francisco Examiner was the first paper acquired by William Randolph Hearst and itself was the subject of the film classic Citizen Kane. The majority of the photographs are fully identified, and back-stamped with dates. Included throughout this auction is a diverse mix of subjects including sports, historical, political, transportation, Hollywood, and all facets of entertainment.
