Lot 785: Martin Dihigo Rookie Card - 1930-31 Double Aguila (Venezuela)

ITEM DESCRIPTION

Reserve: $1,000.00
Winning Bid: $12,890.57

A recent and important discovery. Rookie card of perhaps the greatest all around ballplayer of all time and simply the best Cuban to ever play the game. Circa 1931 Double Aguila is from Venezuela. Shows Martin Dihigo as plain as day on the front and reads “No. 197 Concordia vs. York” for the game between York and Concordia with this being card number 197 in the set. On the verso of this 2.75x3.75” strip of cardboard is entitled “Dihigo da un formidable lenazo y quiebra el bate” paying homage to Dihigo as a batter. And added is the cigarette advertising “Obsequio de los Cigarrillos Doble Aguila Sport etc. etc." There are three Dihigo cards in the set hence this is a unique situation of there being three rookie cards or a “trio.” This is the first of these to come to the marketplace and only one or two are known to exist. Card grades VG-EX to a weak EX with the only defect being minor chipping to the corners. This was a late submission so we are in the process of having this graded. Please look for a grading update on our website when the auction opens on the internet.
