Offered is a wonderful visual chronicle (60+) of Charles S. Howard, owner of thoroughbred celebrity Seabiscuit, including several images of his wife, Marcella Zabala, his son Charles Jr. and his wife, Dorothy Sharp, as well as a broad overview of the Buick entrepreneur’s rich and successful life, trackside and elsewhere. Spans 1920’s to 60’s, and photos measure average up to 8x10, with some front captions, and details on verso include affixed original newspaper clippings and paper captions, news service, photographer and date stamps, and production notes. This lot is from the legendary San Francisco Examiner Archive (SFXArchive).
This is one largest collections ever of historic vintage photos spanning the entire 20th century. The San Francisco Examiner was the first paper acquired by William Randolph Hearst and itself was the subject of the film classic Citizen Kane. The majority of the photographs are fully identified, and back-stamped with dates. Included throughout this auction is a diverse mix of subjects including sports, historical, political, transportation, Hollywood, and all facets of entertainment.
