Enormous (300+) photographic collection of World War II, with a spotlight on Italy and New Guinea, including American casualties and strongholds against the Nazis in Italy, the devastation in that country, its German POW’s, the English army, and the Italians’ remembrances of fallen American soldiers, and in New Guinea: the air raids, attacks and devastation, its Japanese POW’s and casualties, army life amongst the island and its natives. Also includes accents on New Britain, German weaponry, and the Doolittle bombing raids to name a few. Really an amazing grouping of wire photos with some grand and artistic images to relish. Images measure an average 8x10”, all with front captions, and details on verso include affixed original newspaper clippings and paper captions, news service and date stamps, and production notes. This lot is from the legendary San Francisco Examiner Archive (SFXArchive).
This is one largest collections ever of historic vintage photos spanning the entire 20th century. The San Francisco Examiner was the first paper acquired by William Randolph Hearst and itself was the subject of the film classic Citizen Kane. The majority of the photographs are fully identified, and back-stamped with dates. Included throughout this auction is a diverse mix of subjects including sports, historical, political, transportation, Hollywood, and all facets of entertainment.
