ITEM DESCRIPTION

||||||||||||
Presented here are a folder-full (90+) of prized images of the Brown Bomber, Joe Louis, after his WWII service, toying with lesser fighters before his eventual retirement in 1949, and his comeback in 1950 after I.R.S problems revitalized his athletic ambitions. Oft-bearded, the heavyweight champ is shown in various venues and company, including publicity shots with Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd Patterson, and Max Schmeling, to name a few, and in family photos, some fight pics, and playing golf. Very thoughtful group of photos, all have front captions, measure an average 8x10, and on verso details include affixed original newspaper clippings and paper captions, news service and date stamps, and production notes. EX to NRMT.
This lot is from the legendary San Francisco Examiner Archive (SFXArchive).
This is one largest collections ever of historic vintage photos spanning the entire 20th century. The San Francisco Examiner was the first paper acquired by William Randolph Hearst and itself was the subject of the film classic Citizen Kane. The majority of the photographs are fully identified, and back-stamped with dates. Included throughout this auction is a diverse mix of subjects including sports, historical, political, transportation, Hollywood, and all facets of entertainment.
